Luke leaned his head on Noah's shoulder, stroking his fingers over Noah's arm, glancing up at him. "Are you okay?" He knew Noah was still reeling from the Colonel’s unexpected visit just a few days ago.
Noah turned his head, meeting Luke's eyes and tried to smile. "Not really.” He sighed when Luke curled into him, one arm falling lightly over his waist. "But I know he's never going to accept it. Never going to accept me.” He brought one hand up and over Luke's head, resting it across his shoulders, pulling him even closer. He let the other find Luke's hand and their fingers twined together.
Luke watched him, biting his lip before saying. "You know, my parents and I have been talking over the last few days. And... They want you to come live at the farm until you can get back on your feet."
"Live in Oakdale?"
Luke blushed, eyes flicking away to the farthest wall. "It's a nice town. You have friends.” When Noah gave him a questioning look, Luke grinned at him. "Evie and Marc like it. They're thinking of staying."
"Oh.” Noah was smiling at the thought of his friends.
"And you know, you have me.” Luke cleared his throat, adding, "And my parents and sisters all adore you already.” Faith and Natalie had shown up with Luke's parents when the Colonel confrontation was underway and once it was over, they had been allowed to see Noah. They had fallen hard for him and Luke was almost sure it was reciprocated.
"That's what happens when you save my life."
"I didn't."
Luke leaned up and kissed his chin, silencing Noah. "Yes, you did.” He snuggled back into the curve of Noah's neck. After a few minutes had passed, Luke felt Noah's lips on his head, the smallest of kisses in his hair. It tingled its way over his skin and inside, sparking his heart and warming every corner there. He smiled when Noah spoke quietly.
"We saved each other."
Pulling Noah's hand up to his mouth, he kissed his knuckles, relishing the sharp, almost inaudible sound of Noah's breath when his lips touched skin. He mumbled into Noah's fingers, "Either way, to them you're a hero, so if you move into the farm you're going to have instant..."
"Family.” Noah let the word out on a sigh.
Luke opened Noah's hand, kissing the palm, feeling Noah shiver next to him, repeating the word softly. "Family."
Noah's fingers closed around Luke's, sending more sparks through skin, to pool in Luke's stomach. His eyes drifted shut when Noah's breath whispered against his hair and warm lips kissed temples, skin, and cheekbone.
Luke opened his eyes to find Noah an inch away and he smiled slowly at Noah's dancing eyes. "Like the sound of that, huh?"
"I very much do."
Noah's lips hovered over Luke's, eyes flicking up to warm brown eyes and then back to the tempting wet pink. It hurt to move but he needed this, felt the desire shoot through him, bringing with it that bit of fear he lived with.
"It's okay."
Those were the words he needed to hear.
Luke held his breath, making the smallest noise in the back of his throat when Noah captured his mouth. Luke fell hard, deep, forever. Heat spreading over his body, making him hard and wanting, and he moaned into Noah's mouth. Forgetting that Noah was recovering, he pushed up, pressing into Noah's warm thigh. Luke expelled air, releasing Noah's name with it.
It was the moaning of his name that undid Noah. There was a sharp pain, but he ignored it and reached for Luke. He clutched at Luke's shirt and shut his eyes tight, listening to Luke's breathing, to their joined heartbeats. Luke’s hands in his hair, reaching under the gown to his skin, skimming softly over bandaged skin. Noah groaned when Luke's hard cock pressed against his own, felt it when Luke gasped. They grinded together, Noah’s hand clutching Luke’s hips, pain outweighing the pleasure.
This wasn't the best place to do what he wanted.
"Luke..."
It was a moan rather than a command and he pushed up, hissing when pain radiated down his side. Luke paused, half way straddling Noah, pulling back to look at his face. "Oh, God. You're still recovering. I'm so sorry...” He moved to get up but Noah's hands on his hips held him in place.
"I want this."
Luke smiled, stroking his face. "I know you do. Me, too."
Noah stared at him, intent on saying all those words that kept choking him, suffocating him with their strength. He needed Luke to know and to understand.
"I've never wanted like this, Luke. Not to the point where I had to have someone or I'd stop breathing."
Luke shifted closer, bending over him, groaning out Noah's name, forehead to forehead and he said, "We can't right now."
"I know."
"You're still hurt."
"I know."
They stayed quiet for a long moment and then Noah frowned, sighing. "This sucks."
Luke giggled, sliding off and under the covers, nestling into Noah's side softly so as not to hurt him. His head rested under Noah's chin and he glanced up to Noah looking at him. "It kinda doesn't."
Noah smiled, leaning down to press his lips on Luke's in a promise. Soon, it would be different. They’d have to wait for now.
It would be worth it.
*
Kevin turned from the door where he could see Luke and Noah talking quietly, hands entwined. He glanced back at Becky who was just grinning at him.
“I think they’re cute.”
Kevin nodded his head. “Yeah.”
She raised an eyebrow and he waved a hand at her, shaking his head. “I mean, I don’t have a problem with it. Not really. It’s just…Luke and anybody. It’s just -- no. It‘s like watching, you know, family, or my sister making out with some guy or something.”
She laughed out loud, covering her mouth. “You didn't just compare Luke to your sister?”
Kevin’s eyes opened wide, head falling into his hands. “I am so going to have to learn how not to insult my gay best friend, aren’t I?”
“I’m going with a big old yes on that one.”
“I am so screwed.”
*
Noah tapped his fingers on his leg, glancing out of the window, and sighing loudly.
“That’s, like, the tenth one in thirty minutes.”
“Don’t count then, if it bothers you.”
Evie glanced at him and when he looked at her with a horrified expression she began to laugh. He opened his mouth to apologize and she waved him off. “I know you’re just cranky being stuck in here. Who the hell wouldn’t be? Besides, I like to know there’s a little fire in there, babe.”
Noah rolled his eyes, turning to look at the door when it opened and smiling when Luke entered. “Hi.”
Luke grinned at him, basket in his hands and he set it down before kissing Evie on the cheek and leaning over to brush one on Noah’s lips. Their lips parted slightly, Noah’s tongue licking a path inside, and Luke gave a surprised moan.
“Guys. Still in the room. Thanks.”
Luke pulled away, brushing one more quick kiss on Noah’s lips then turned to grin at Evie.
“You’re just jealous.”
“Oh, yes. That’s what we lesbians dream about. Making out with hot guys.”
“You know you love it.”
Evie raised an eyebrow. “Should I tell you about my fantasy starring that cute nurse Daisy?”
Luke and Noah shook their heads. “No!”
Luke held up his hands. “We’ll stop.
She grinned, pumping her fist in the air. “I win.”
They laughed and when the door opened again, it died down at the look on Jack’s face.
“I need to talk to Noah.”
Marc lifted his head from his arms, smiling at Evie as she entered. “What’s up?”
She sighed. “I have a feeling Luke and Noah are about to have their first fight.” Falling into the kitchen chair, she leaned on one hand, head tilted to look at Marc. “It depresses me.”
“See? You have no faith. I so get to be Best Woman.”
She threw a nearby napkin at him as she laughed, then scowled when she noticed the open For Rent section of the paper in front of him. “Going somewhere?”
He nodded, face reddening a little, scanning the ads as he said, “I love the Snyder’s for putting me up but it’s not fair to take up room in their house. I know they said that we could stay as long as we wanted but…
“It feels weird. I know.”
“So, I’m looking for a place. Now, that I got that job at Al’s, I could afford a place. With a roommate. Or two.”
Evie’s heart sank a little until Marc looked at her and smiled. “Want to be Roommate #1?”
Her grin was big. “So, we definitely sticking around?”
Marc snorted. “Are you kidding? How the fuck do you think those two would survive without us?”
Evie nodded. That was very true.
“Besides the gay scene in Oakdale so needs us.”
“Amen.”
*
"No."
"I wasn't asking, Noah. If you do this thing, then I go with you."
Noah glanced up at Jack who was finding the view of the parking lot very interesting. "Jack, they only need me, right?"
Jack looked at Luke, then Noah, and nodded. "They've got enough testimony from the kids that were in the program but weren't tested on. And they had enough from the ones that can't remember."
Luke scowled at that. It was not his fault that none of what happened before Noah rescued him was clear. "I don't want Noah to leave alone."
Noah walked up behind him, leaning his chin on Luke's shoulder. "I have to do this. I won't be able to if I am worrying about you."
"That's not fair."
Luke turned, glancing at Jack and then Noah. "Fine but I -" His cell rang and when he pulled it out, he rolled his eyes. "Jade - I don't...you‘re back? In Oakdale? I can't pick you up from the airport-"
Noah pulled his phone away and glared at him. “She went to find Damian for you.”
Luke sighed, snatching the phone back and speaking into it while glaring at Noah. "Apparently I can. I'll be there soon."
Noah smiled, kissed him once, and followed him to the door.
"I'll be back."
Noah watched Luke leave and turned to meet Jack's gaze, and nodded. "Tell me what I have to do."
He wasn't sure if it was the confrontation with The Colonel, his sense of right, or that ingrained need to run away when he was scared of screwing everything up, but when Jack told him how much hung on his testimony, how much they needed it to bring down the program in its entirety, he'd known it was what he had to do.
"You just tell your story, kiddo."
Noah nodded, and then asked, "When do I have to go?"
The door opened and two suits walked in.
Noah looked at Jack.
"Pretty much now...”
"But I'm still in here."
"The hospital agreed to release you early. They said you're doing well and that you can travel. You can sign the papers on the way out."
Noah shook his head. "I can't just leave like this. I have to talk to Luke."
"I'll explain it to him. He'll understand."
Noah snorted.
Yeah, he was sure that he wouldn't.
"I can't just...right now, really?"
Jack nodded. Once.
Noah closed his eyes and pointed at the table. "Give me that. Please."
*
Luke stared at the envelope Jack held out for him, then up at Jack. "He left.” It was a quiet statement and Luke refused to admit that the tightness in his chest had anything to do with it. Tears he wouldn't let fall gathered in his eyes and he sniffed.
Noah had left.
Without even saying anything to him.
"Don't blame him, Luke. The trial starts in two days. It's my fault he had to go."
Luke glared at him. "Oh, good. Then I can be angry with you since you're here.” He snatched the letter from Jack, not opening it. "Why did he have to do anything?"
Jack looked at him. "Because it was the right thing to do. Because if we can get these people punished for what happened, we can stop it from happening again. Because you would have done the same."
He knew that was all true and if they had asked him, he would have done it in a heartbeat.
Yet, he also knew what it meant for Noah to go through that alone.
"He needs someone with him."
Jack ruffled his hair, like he had done since Luke could remember and smiled at him. "It's a week at the most, Luke. Just read the letter and don't worry so much. He won't be alone.” With that, he left.
As soon as the door closed, Luke ripped the envelope open, seeing Noah's small neat writing.
Luke -
I'm not so good with words. Not like you are. I've bottled them away for so long, like my feelings, like who I was, that when it's time to use them or to feel or just to be, it's like I can't take that step forward.
At least that was until I met you.
What does that mean? Because I can't believe you're real. You're too...beautiful. I don’t care if that sounds corny. You are. And funny. And... Perfect. Well, you can be stubborn and hotheaded and you talk a lot sometimes....
But all those things you are...make me happy.
So what does that mean?
I don't know...I've never felt like this. Ever.
So maybe it's...love?
Maybe I'm a little bit in love with you.
Maybe that scares me a lot.
Because I don't think you feel the same. Not completely.
So, maybe while I’m gone...you'll think of me. And when I come back -- and I plan to come back -- I'll have found the courage to say this to your face.
And maybe...you might...love me back. A little.
If not...
I can wait.
You're worth it.
Love,
Noah
P.S. I really do, you know.
P.P.S. A lot more than a little.
Those stupid tears were falling now and Luke couldn't stop the grin that curled at his mouth.
Noah loved him a lot more than a little.
He loved him back.
He glanced at his watch and the date.
This was going to be the longest week of his life.
*
“He wouldn’t have left if he didn’t think it was the only option, Luke.” Evie patted his shoulder, looking at the small group gathered at the table. She’d been saying the same thing for over twenty-four hours.
They were supposed to be looking at their possible new apartment. As luck had it, the first ad they called had been Kevin. He and Marc had hit it off immediately though Evie was still a little cautious. None of them had graduated high school, yet. Kevin had a part time job, Marc didn’t make much money and she wasn’t sure what she would do.
And then there was the whole Kevin wasn’t exactly gay friendly from what she remembered.
She’d heard enough about him to be hesitant but when she’d spoken to Noah to tell him, he’d explained that Luke had told him Kevin had apologized. That he was trying to get their friendship back. Then, he had told her he was in Montana for the trial and could she please make sure Luke was okay while he was gone.
“He hasn’t called.”
“Luke, he’s in depositions and stuff like that.” Kevin said from behind the counter, taking a soda out of the fridge, tapping it before opening. “I bet they won’t even let him talk to anyone until they get all that taken care of.”
“It’s been two days.”
Jade walked in from the other room, rolling her eyes slightly on her way out. “If you ever bothered to look at the message board, you’d know he called like three times today.” She handed Luke his cell phone, kissing his head as she said, “And you know, keeping your phone with you might help.”
She took Kevin’s soda on the way out, turning and grinning when she got to the door. “He sounds pretty good on the phone, coz. Watch out or I may have to…”
“I will kill you.”
She threw her head back, laughing at him before winking and sending him air kisses as the door closed.
Evie sighed as she stared at the door. “Are you sure she’s not…?”
Luke laughed and hugged Evie. “I am totally sure.”
“Damn.”
Kevin laughed and shook his head, then pointed at Luke’s phone. “Maybe you should call him back.”
Luke shook his head. “He’ll call.”
“Okay, fine. Then stop bitching about it and giving the poor dude grief. Just, you know, chill.”
Luke glared at Kevin. “Shut up, man.”
Evie and Marc’s laughter filled the room and Luke smiled, despite everything.
*
Noah pulled open his phone, punching in the numbers and when it was answered, all he could hear was silence.
“You’re mad.”
Luke sniffed. “You think.”
“I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you but I didn’t have time.”
“Right. Cause you know, phones don’t work.”
“If I heard your voice, I would have told them to go to hell.”
There was more silence and Noah sighed. He would make them take him back, to hell with everything.
“Are we going to talk about -?”
“When I get back. I want to see your face when I say it.”
He could sense Luke smiling. “Stop being charming and sweet.”
“Sorry, apparently, it’s ingrained.” Noah smiled in return when Luke laughed aloud. “I miss you, Luke.”
The laugh stopped abruptly and Noah knew Luke was grinning now.
“I miss you, too.”
“Good.”
The silence lasted a minute. Then…
“I’m still mad.”
“I know.”
*
Parker was sitting on the porch steps when Luke came back from the meeting at his school. He was looking forward to re-entering high school especially now that his parents had helped to get Marc and Evie register in, too. They had to take a special test to make sure they still placed in their class level and to earn the credits they’d lost while stuck in…
Luke shook his head and smiled at Parker. He’d been meaning to talk to him. Thank him for trying to help. “Hey, Parker. I haven’t seen you around.”
“Grounded for life.”
“That’s not fair, is it?”
Parker shrugged. “Maybe it’s just another week but it feels like life.”
Luke laughed, sitting next to his cousin and bumping his shoulder against the younger boy’s. “Hey.”
Parker looked over at him. “Yeah?”
“Thanks for saving our lives.”
He shook his head, confused. “I didn’t do anything. They already knew.”
Luke shook his head, putting his arm over Parker’s shoulder and squeezing a little. He knew that wasn’t true. Jack had admitted if Parker hadn’t been insistent that they were alive, if he hadn’t taken off to Chicago, they might not have made it on time. “I don’t think that’s true. You got them there faster. Even if by accident.”
“Well, you’re welcome, I guess.” Parker smiled, the sadness he always carried dissipating some and Luke smiled in return. They sat in silence a few minutes, minds drifting, taking in the quiet normalcy of the farm.
Luke glanced at Parker, leaning his elbows on his knees, he said quietly, “I know what it feels like to be different. So, if you ever want to talk. Just know I’m here, okay?”
Parker nodded, looking away and Luke patted his hand, getting up as he did. “Let’s go finish off Grandma’s cookies.”
*
It was easier than Noah imagined it was going to be. He leaned his head down, shoving hands into his hair, breathing through the slight ache at his side. He had done it. He had sat in a room full of people and told them about David. The words hadn't been forthcoming at first, but then he remembered David, Rodney, and Luke.
He had told them about his own experience there. How he had wanted his father's approval, so he had denied who he was. He had believed what they told him. He had ignored all the scary signs that told him something was wrong. He explained to them about the guilt of having led David to his death by not standing up for himself. Answered questions about Kreeger, and what he had done. He relived details of the electroshock and mind-numbing therapy. He told them about finding David. His relationship with undercover Agent Rodney Sharp, and how he had helped to gather information.
He didn't mention Rodney's own vendetta against Kreeger and the program. That had been Rodney's story to tell.
He spoke of Ryan and Paul, what had been done to them. He spoke of what they had tried to do to Luke. He told them about their escape and what Kreeger had tried to do to them in the end. When it was over, he had wanted to run from the room.
Somehow, Noah Mayer had found the strength to say everything he was thinking.
Everything that he had seen, heard, and survived.
Something had pulled loose inside the moment he had opened that place where he kept it all tightly lidded. He knew the box was still closed for the most part but just letting that small part out, lightened the weight.
He wanted to call Luke.
Tell him everything.
Tell him how he felt.
His father's voice, always in the back of his head, reminded him that nothing good ever lasted. That he was no hero, no matter what he had done. Noah pushed it away, back to that place where he could pretend it didn't exist. He knew better now.
"Hey, kid. Mind if I take a seat?"
Noah raised his head, eyes looking up at the tall, dark-skinned man standing over him. He shook his head and scooted over some to allow room on the bench.
"You think they make the seats so uncomfortable as part of the punishment for the criminals?"
Noah glanced over and shrugged. "I have no idea, sir."
He received a grin in return and a hand was offered to him. "It's nice to meet you, Noah. I'm Tony."
Noah blinked a few times, mouth falling open slightly, and he reached for the offered hand. "Tony?"
"Yep."
Noah shook the hand, pulling his own back after a minute and stared openly at the man next to him. "What are you doing here?"
Tony surveyed the room, taking in everything as far as Noah could tell and when he brought his eyes back to Noah's, there was a shadow crossing them. "I wanted to make sure that Rodney's death wasn't for nothing."
He could understand that.
"Yeah. Me, too."
Tony smiled. "He really liked you, you know. Whenever he was able to get word to me, he talked about you and how you tried to help David.” Tony's jaw clenched and he looked away. "He was like my little brother, too."
Noah rested a hand on Tony's shoulder and squeezed. "I'm sorry about both of them, Tony."
Slight shake of his head and Tony patted Noah's hand, standing as he did. "You did good in there, kid. You honored them. You made it worth something.” Noah watched him look around the room and he realized that whatever Tony was or did, this was probably not the best place for him to be.
"Thanks for everything."
Tony glanced at him, shaking his head. "I never got to help you, did I?"
"You tried. That's all that matters."
"Seriously, kid. You're too nice."
Noah smiled and shrugged.
Tony looked away and then back, straight at Noah. "Listen. If you guys ever need anything, and I mean anything, if you're in trouble, whatever, you call me.” He handed Noah a card, nodding one last time before walking down the hall and disappearing around a corner.
Noah looked at the card, touching the sides of the square before sticking it in his pocket and finding the nearest phone.
He had a call to make.
*
Holden watched his son play with his sisters. It was a sight he hadn’t been sure he’d ever see again. The calm that had escaped him for all those months settled over him. There was only one thing that agitated him. Damian had left for Italy as soon as he’d gotten word that Luke was safe.
As always, he’d run away.
He didn’t know what Luke thought or how he felt but he hated to think that Luke would one day come to loathe his biological father. Holden hated the man, but he didn’t share DNA with the bastard.
He knew it was going to be hard on Luke not to let those feelings consume him.
His phone rang and he picked it up. “Hello?” The voice on the other end was hesitant and it made Holden smile. “Hey! How are you? Good. Did it go alright? Uh-huh.” He blinked in surprise and then glanced up at the clock. “Right now? Okay. When are you…? Alright. I’ll send Jack.”
He hung up and glanced back out in time to see Kevin greet his son. They shook hands and Holden watched Luke’s face carefully. There was happiness to see his friend. But the sadness he saw in Luke’s eyes wasn’t about Kevin. He missed Noah. That much Holden knew.
There was no pain there, though. None of the kind that he used to see in Luke when it came to Kevin. That was also due to Noah.
Holden smiled and opened his phone, making the arrangements that he had promised.
*
"So when does Noah come back?” Kevin passed Luke the basketball and crouched down in defense mode.
Luke glared at him. "Don't try to distract me, man."
Kevin laughed, faking right and reaching for the ball, grabbing it and making a perfect arc of it into the basket. He threw his arms over his head in a victory sign and shuffled a bit in place. "Davis 16, Snyder - a sad, puny 8 points."
"Boys."
They turned and Lily was waving them into the house. "Dinner is ready."
Letting the ball drop, Kevin practically ran toward the door making Luke laugh aloud. He caught up, nudging his friend with his shoulder. "To answer your question, I talked to him today before his testimony. He said it would be over soon. And he'd come home right after.” They hadn't spoken about the letter or what it meant or what they would do when Noah came back. It wasn't a discussion they could have over a phone, anyway.
Kevin smiled. "Home, huh?"
"Oh, shut up. Don't make me start mentioning that embarrassing little poem you wrote for Becky, okay?"
Kevin blinked and mimicked zipping his lips. Then he unzipped them to ask, “Did he say anything about your friends? Ryan and Paul?”
Luke nodded. “Ryan barely remembers any of it but he’s doing better. They’re keeping him at a halfway house. Whatever that chip did, it wiped his mind clean. He doesn’t really remember any of us. Just Paul, for the most part. Noah said that when he spoke to Paul, he had plans to go see him.”
He knew it would take them both a long time to recover and he hoped that when they did, whatever they had between them survived.
"Luke! Come see this!” Faith motioned to him and he ran through the door and into the house. Everyone had gathered in the parlor and when he reached the couch, he heard the newscast announcement.
"Several incidents that occurred no more than a few weeks ago were tantamount in the decision of closing down the program permanently. Testimonies from teenagers that had been a part of the course helped to bring that decision to pass quickly. Apparently, there were quite a few unorthodox methods that the program used in their effort to "reprogram" their clients. Parents of several victims came forward to press charges against the head council."
Luke made a derisive noise, shaking his head. Of course, they were doing that now. Never mind, they had done the most damage. Damian flashed in his mind but he pushed him away. He never wanted anything to do with him. He glanced at his parents and when his dad caught Luke watching them, he smiled. Holden reached for Luke, and he let his Dad hug him until there was a knock on the door.
Holden looked down at him, nodding to the door. "You want to get that, kiddo? Jack is dropping off a package."
Luke rolled his eyes, but walked toward the door, making his way across the kitchen and pulled it open.
His eyes met shining blue ones.
"Hello, Luke."
It took him a second to register that it wasn't a dream and Noah was in front of him, warm and smiling. He threw himself at Noah, laughing his name out. "Noah!”
Noah laughed, the sound welcome and soothing to Luke. “I thought you were mad at me?”
“ I am,” He held on to him and when he pulled back, the words tumbled out, "I swear to God, if you ever leave me without a proper goodbye, or at all, I will hunt you down and kill you.” He held onto Noah's face, thumb swiping over cheeks and lips. "And you are out of your mind if you don't know that I love you. A lot more than a little."
Noah grinned and breathed out a laugh. "Thank God."
The laugh warmed all of him and Luke grinned back. "Now kiss me before I die."
Noah's happy reply was cut short and his mouth bruised against Luke's, licking inside, hands delving into hair and holding tight. He pulled away, leaning his forehead against Luke's, chest heavy with emotion. This was the missing parts of his life. Right here. His eyes held Luke, his voice a whisper between. "I do, you know."
Luke's eyes shined with so much love that it took Noah's breath away and when he felt lips back on his, that shiver over his spine and into his heart, soothing all those places that would always be bruised; he let his heart open and hope. When Luke whispered his love back, he believed it, and let it undo him.
This was where he belonged.
Forever.
End.
